Quoting and estimating
Plumbing estimating software, compared on cost control
Plumbing estimates fail in a specific way: the price is fine until the wall opens. What separates useful software from a quote template is whether it lets you compare the estimate with the finished job and change the next one. This page ranks on job costing, which the catalog records, and is explicit that estimate builder quality has not been tested.
9 products serve plumbing and list job costing. Service-led shops doing repairs, drain work and water heaters should start with the published-price options and test the price book on a tablet. Repipe, remodel and commercial work needs staged costing and change orders, which is where the quote-only platforms earn their price. Fast-service shops should also read flat rate pricing software, which covers the plumbing price-book case.

Estimate a repipe you have already finished
Pick a completed job where the scope changed mid-way, because that is the normal case rather than the exception. Rebuild the original estimate in each finalist, then apply the change that actually happened and see what the software does with it.
When scope changes, can it
- Raise a change order the customer approves, without rewriting the whole estimate?
- Keep the original quote intact for comparison afterwards?
- Bill in stages rather than only on completion?
- Show what the change did to the margin before you agree to it?
Questions worth asking in the demo
- Where do material prices come from, and who updates them?
- Can fixture and fitting assemblies be saved and reused as one line?
- Does the technician see cost, or only price, on the mobile app?
- Can an apprentice and a licensed plumber be billed at different rates on one job?
- What does the customer receive, and does it look like it came from us?
The price book is the real product
Most of the value people attribute to estimating software actually comes from the price book behind it: a maintained list of tasks with materials, labour time and a price you have decided is right. Software makes that list fast to apply and hard to fudge, but it will not build it for you, and a stale price book produces confident, wrong quotes at speed. Before comparing products, work out who in your business owns that list and how often they will revisit it. Then judge each product on how painful it makes that job.
Does this replace takeoff software?
No. Drawing-based takeoff for commercial plumbing is a separate category and is not reviewed here. The products above are field service platforms that include quoting; if your estimating starts from plans, expect to keep a specialist tool and use these for operations.
Why rank on job costing instead of the estimate builder?
Because job costing is recorded in the catalog and can be sourced, while estimate builder quality has not been tested by anyone here. Publishing a ranking of untested software would be an opinion presented as a fact.
Is flat rate pricing the same as estimating?
Related but not the same. Flat rate prices a known task from a book; estimating prices work that has to be scoped first. Most plumbing businesses need both, and the balance between them should decide your shortlist.
Trades, job costing, inventory, service agreements and pricing come from the reviewed catalog with sources and check dates. Estimate builder quality is not rated, because it has not been tested.
